The existing Valaichchenai Fishry Harbour was constructed with funds provided by the Government of Netherlands in 1982, located approximately 35km north of Batticaloa in the Valaichchenai lagoon, about 3km from the mouth. The onshore fishery facilities such as auction building, boat lifting, cold storage, fuel, ice plant, work shop were severally damaged. The Government of Sri Lanka decided to rehabilitate the harbour under the Asian Development Bank Loan for North East Community Development Project. Ceylon Fishery Harbour Corporation, as the client of this project, selected LHI to carry out the consultancy service for rehabilitation of the Valaichchenai fishery harbour. The project was started in March 2007 and the project cost is LKR 13 million.
