The newest golf club of Sri Lanka has the grandest setting among the serried Kandy mountains and adjoining the spectacular Victoria Dam. The appropriately named Victoria Golf Club has much more than just magnificent views.
Three hours drive from Colombo and a few kilometers past the hill capital Kandy lies the picturesque Victoria Golf Club. Landscaped out of 500 acres of farmland and jungle by golf architect Donald Steel, this masterpiece has been voted as one of the 100 most beautiful golf courses in the world. The picturesque Victoria Dam borders two thirds of the course and the rest comprises of coconut trees and jungle. The beauty of this course is best seen at dawn and dusk. The morning dew adds a light sheen to the lush green fairways and golfers are treated to a variety of endemic and sometimes migratory birds. Toward late afternoon the breeze picks up and as the sun sets a golden hue washes over the course. It’s simply breathtaking.
The design of this course is unique – right-angled doglegs, coconut trees in the middle of fairways, elevated tees that make judging yardage more difficult, lightning fast—yet true—greens, and a very unforgiving rough. Clubhouse facilities include a restaurant that makes many mouth-watering dishes – you MUST try the Sri Lankan omelette for breakfast! – and a well stocked pro-shop where you may buy golf balls and rent clubs.
The special about Victoria is its design and layout, the scenery, as well as the relaxed atmosphere that cannot be found at upper echelon golf courses anywhere in the world, all contribute to making this a unique experience for anyone that enjoys the game.
