Since its inception, which runs back to 1800s, the hospital has undergone numerous expansion to cope with the increasing demand. Following are some key moments from our history which speak to our development and establishment as a leader with a reputation for delivering the most advanced programs and services.

 

The cornerstone for the new general hospital ratnapura was laid in January 1952 after the old hospital called the ratnapura government hospital was severely damaged by floods. After 7 years in the making with a design of an English hospital, the hospital opened its doors to the public on 27th September 1958. At that time it was one of the comprehensive hospitals in southeast Asia with inward, clinic and surgery facilities.

In 1988, General hospital Ratnapura was incorporated into provincial council and in 1998 it was integrated into line ministry. 9 years later, the hospital was upgraded to Provincial General Hospital Ratnapura.

 

Provincial General hospital – Ratnapura is one of the biggest full-fledged, multi – specialty, tertiary care hospital, hospitals in the country encompasses 941 beds. It has all the required facilities and infrastructure in the various departments and is fully equipped to render specialized medical, surgical, diagnostic and other allied services, its service area is home to about 1,000,000 people.

 

From its inception, Provincial General hospital ratnapura has sought to answer and anticipate the needs of the communities that created it. More than 50 years have passed since then, and the challenges and changes have shaped our growth of mission and purpose, and of ever-expanding community involvement.
