Hakgala a hill of 2169 m altitude, the 7 th highest in the country, and situated south east of Nuwaraeliya. The hill top as well as the surrounding area has been declared as a Strict Natural reserve due to its unique ecological features. Its north eastern face is rocky, below which is the Botanical Garden by the same name as well as the Nuwaraeliya Welimada highway. Kande-ella reservoir and the Elk plains is to the west.
