The Kalpitiya fishery harbour is a natural harbour situated in the North east of Sri Lanka in the Puttalam district along a stretch of lagoon. Although the Kalpitiya fishery harbour has the capacity to service five hundred vessels simultaneously, provisions have been made for expansion in anticipation of development. Most importantly for exporters, is that the area is in close proximity to the country’s international airport.
Kalpitiya was used by ancient kings and subsequently by the country’s colonisers as a trading point and is therefore a point of historical interest. Kalpitiya was declared a ‘tourist zone’ by a Government gazette and is rapidly becoming a tourist destination because of the large Dolphin and Whale populations located off its coast.
